MOVEMENT, TERRAIN AND FIRE PROTECTION For copyright reasons I cannot provide too many details on the inner working of the ASL Terrain and Combat Charts. For this reason most of the Fire protection and Movement costs will be listed in laymens terms. For example, both Wood and Stone Buildings offer units protection from enemy Fire with Stone offering more benefit than Wood, and so on. |
BRUSH It is not considered a LOS obstruction unless LOS goes through more than 3 hexes of Brush. Fire at units through Brush hexes offsets the negative effects of moving in the open when being fired at. Movement through Brush hexes costs 2MF per hex for Foot, 4-6MF for Wheeled Vehicles. |
Basic Terrain Information |
HILLS Hills are Brown in color. The exact color detemrine Hill Level from 1 to 4. Light Brown is a Level 1 Hill. Movement UP a hill level cost 2x the normal rate for the hex type. Movement across Hill hexes costs 1MF per hex. Hills are considered Open Ground unless another terrain feature is is the Hill hex. |
BRIDGES Bridges can be either Wooden or Stone. They do provide some cover for units in that hex. |
WOODS Woods hexes do block LOS through them and do provide some protection from fire (less than Wooden Buildings). Movement through Woods hexes costs 2MF per hex for Foot units. Vehicles can enter but at a costof most or all of their MF (depending on the vehicle type, i.e Wheeled or Tracked). They are also subject to Bogging. |
OPEN GROUND Open ground is any hex that is light green. It costs 1MF for Infantry andTracked Vehicles. For Wheeled Vehicles it costs 3MF for each hex moved through. It does not offer any protection from fire and is not considered a LOS obstruction. |
GRAVEYARD Open terrainIt is not considered a LOS obstruction unless LOS goes through more than 3 hexes of Brush. Fire at units through Brush hexes offsets the negative effects of moving in the open when being fired at. Movement through Brush hexes costs 2MF per hex for Foot, 4-6MF for Wheeled Vehicles. |
GULLY Gullies are considered ditches or streambeds. Units can be down in them (out of LOS) or at the crest. Being in a crest offers some limited Fire Protection. The do not block LOS through the hex. |
WATER Water terrain is not passable by any unit unless in a boat, can swim (horses) or the vehicle has amphibious capability. It does not offer any protection from fire and is not considered a LOS obstruction. |
BUILDINGS Buildings will either be Wooded (Brown) or Stone (Gray). Both cost 2MF to enter (1MF to move aorund inside) for Foot. Tracked Vehicles may enter BUT at the risk of Bogging Down and collapsing the Building. No other vehicles can enter Buildings. Some Support Weapons must be Dismantled to be carried into Buildings, some cannot enter at all. Buildings DO block LOS (equal to their level) and offer Fire protection (Stone offers more than Wood). |
ORCHARD Orchards are not considered a LOS obstruction unless LOS goes through more than 3 hexes of Orchards. Fire at units through Orchard hexes offsets the negative effects of moving in the open when being fired at. Movement through Orchards is 1MF per hex for Foot, 1-3MF for Vehicles. |
ROADS Roads are usually Dirt (Light Brown) or Paved (Light Grey). Normal movement is usually 1MF per hex. Road hexes cost vehicle movement of 1/2MF per hex (not buttoned up) or 1MF (buttoned up). Roads offer no protection from fire. Infantry can gain 1 extra MF IF they spend their entire move moving along road hexes. |
FIELDS Fields are usually in season (Yellow) or are considered plowed and when out of season (Brown). Movement through Filed hexes costs 1 1/2MF per hex for Foot, 4MF for Wheeled Vehicles and 1MF for Tracked. |
HEDGES All Hedges are considered thick bushes and do not block LOS (unless either the target or firer is entrenched). They do prvide protection from Fire (but less than Walls). |
WALLS All Walls are considered stone and do not block LOS (unless either the target or firer is entrenched). They do prvide protection from Fire (more so that Hedges). Wheeled Vehicles cannot cross them, Tracked Vehicles can but at the risk of bogging down. |
